We can have dinner on Mars…okay it’s a total fantasy, but for a theme-based restaurant, this one satisfies my sci-fi self! Mars 2112 will take those of us un-astronauts into outer space. Oh, and we can bring family and friends too…and the martian menu is surprisingly similar to earthling cuisine.
The reality of making dinner on Mars will be quite different. Maya R. Cooper, a senior research scientist for NASA, is working on the dietary challenges for future travelers to Mars. They can’t launch with enough food (it’ll be too heavy), so they need to figure out how and what to grow. According to an article by Clara Moskowitz on Space.com, “NASA scientists have identified 10 candidate crops that seem to fit the bill for astronaut food: lettuce, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, green onions, radishes, bell peppers, strawberries, fresh herbs and cabbages.” Ugh, I think I’d go hungry.
